What is Seanol and does it really work?

Who doesn’t want to be young forever? Imagine if you can delay your aging process and could hold onto your youth. Well, it is possible now. Studies have shown that anti-oxidants can counteract free radicals, the root cause of many age-related disorders such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and many more. Anti-oxidants are the substances that contain nutrients to fight free radicals antinflammation on cellular level. As scientists are revealing the secret benefits of these amazing nutrients, many companies have started manufacturing supplements that provide you with wide array of anti-oxidants. Seanol is an anti-oxidant rich extract derived from brown algae found exclusively in the coast off of Jeju Island in South Korea, called Ecklonia Cava.

What is Seanol (Ecklonia Cava Extract or ECE):

Seanol is a polyphenol complex extracted from particular Brown seaweed called Ecklonia Cava. Seanol is also called ECE (Ecklonia Cava Extract). It is said to be one hundred times more potent than any other anti-oxidant that may be present on earth. Discovered by a Korean researcher, Dr. Haengwoo Lee, this potent polyphenol provides wide array of health benefits. Recent evidence has shown that Ecklonia cava contains a richer supply of total phenolic compounds, phlorotannins than any other brown seaweeds. Seanol is a fat soluble anti-oxidant, which means it can be easily absorbed by all types of human cells. Most of the other anti-oxidants are water-soluble, and they get broken down by the water in the body before they even reach our cells. The fat soluble factor also allows Seanol to remain in your body as long as a dozen hours and penetrate the three layers of every cell in our body, providing higher and more lasting benefits. On the other hand, water-soluble anti-oxidants will only stay in the body for approximately 30 minutes.

Clinical studies on Seanol:

Many clinical studies and research has been carried out to find the beneficial effects of Seanol on health. Ecklonia cava has demonstrated several health promoting properties such as radical scavenging, neuroprotective, anti-oxidative, immunomodulatory, anti-asthmatic, bactericidal and protease inhibitory activities. The antioxidant properties of Ecklonia cava are due to the presence of polyphenolic compounds, phlorotannins- (phloroglucinol, eckol and dieckol). These three phlorotannins extracted from Ecklonia cava have been identified as the major components responsible for most of the health benefits of Seanol. Moreover, the ORAC score of Seanol is 8,368, which is the highest among all the foods containing anti- oxidant properties. ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbent Capacity) is defined as the nutrient or anti-oxidant capacity of any food. High ORAC value means high anti-oxidant properties. For instance, the ORAC score of resveratrol is 4803 ?mol TE/gm, turmeric has a total ORAC value of 159277 ?mol TE/100 g and oranges 750. Hence, Seanol gives you far more power to fight against radical damage and prevent the oxidation of healthy cells.

Role of anti-oxidants in the body:

Anti-oxidants are the nutrient dense compounds that neutralize the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are the harmful byproducts of the normal metabolic processes going on within the body. These free radicals start damaging healthy cells, and this leads to development of chronic age related disorders. However, anti-oxidants have the ability to fight these harmful free radicals and delay the effects of aging.

Seanol contains concentrated amounts of anti-oxidants that also help the body to fight chronic inflammation, which is the root cause of many chronic diseases.

Health benefits of Seanol:

Some of the main benefits of Seanol include:

Cardiovascular benefits:

Many studies have demonstrated the cardio-protective properties of Seanol. Seanol has two major actions on cardiovascular health- blood circulation and vasodilation. Seanol acts as a natural ACE inhibitor, which means it prevents the constriction of blood vessels. This helps in maintaining healthy and normal blood flow in the arteries and veins. Moreover, Seanol balances plasmin and fibrin levels in the blood, thereby ensuring healthy blood viscosity. The anti-oxidant properties of Seanol prevent the damage of endothelial lining by neutralising the activity of free radicals. All these benefits of this amazing anti-oxidant rich food keep your heart healthy and fit.

Cholesterol levels:

Studies have shown that taking Seanol as a daily supplement reduces LDL levels and increases HDL (good cholesterol) levels. It also helps in decreasing triglycerides in the body. Another way in which Seanol works is by inhibiting the oxidation of LDL and removing the deposited plaque from the endothelial linings. This reduces the risk of atherosclerosis. It also reduces vascular inflammation.

Sexual health and ED:

Seanol has been effective in improving the symptoms of ED (erectile dysfunction). The condition is characterized by weaker erections due to insufficient nitric oxide in the body. The long-term administration of Seanol significantly contributes to the neutralization of oxidative risk factors and the normalization of the general vascular conditions around the sexual organ, thereby improving overal blood flow, thus also peripheral blood circulation through sexual organs. Seanol has been found to be as effective as Viagra® in improving erectile function after a six month intake study. (Seanol doesn’t work like Viagra® achieveing quick results. Like with the rest of its benefits, it needs to be taken daily for a long term and improvements are achieved gradually). Going on with the study, in very important and fulfilling aspects aspects of Sexual relationships like Intercourse satisfaction, orgasmic function and overall satisfaction men with previous erectile dysfunction got much higher score with Seanol than Viagra® and there were also no side effects.

Blood flow:

Apart from all mentioned above, After a six week study, it was confirmed that ECE can rejuvenate damaged endothelial cells to produce nitric oxide(NO) , increasing dilation of the blood vessels by 50%.

Joint pain, Joint health:

The anti-inflammatory properties of Seanol play an important role in relieving the symptoms of inflammatory conditions of joints, including arthritis, rheumatism or osteoarthritis. Joint pain becomes increasingly more common as we get older. The most common condition is knee pain, but joint pain can affect any part of your body. SEANOL has demonstrated significant analgesic effects in inhibiting the expression of the COX enzymes for arthritis, as well as for neuropathic and FMS/CFS pain. Clinical studies show that SEANOL’s impact on neuralgia for osteoarthritic patients comparable to the COX-2 inhibitors (used as a positive control) that also is reinforced by the 30% reduction in pain found in the SEANOL study among FMS patients. SEANOL was tested for efficacy in a 12-week study amongst with osteoarthritic knee conditions. Knee joint pain is a major concern in millions of people with different joint disorders. Marine-D3 can help to reduce joint pain and inflamation and improve joint function and comfort.

Neuropathic pain:

A 4-week clinical study of patients with neuropathic pain established that SEANOL has a highly favorable impact on neuropathic pain (79% positive response, average neuropathy reduction over 4 weeks of 40%). Patient’s global assessment (PaGAs) and Visual analog scale of pain (VAS) were measured at baseline, 2 weeks and 4 weeks.27 Standard prescription medications for neuropathic pain typically tend to have a low rate of response in effecting a significant decrease in neuropathic pain.

Fibromyalgia and sleep disorders:

SEANOL provided major multi-symptom management (i.e., reduction in pain, fatigue, sleep disorders) for fibromyalgia (FMS) patients. From mechanism of action perspective among FMS patients, the research conducted on SEANOL demonstrates anecdotally that it promotes increased serotonin and HGH production, and it is hypothesized that it also serves to down-regulate ‘Substance-P’leading to reduced nociception (amplification of pain sensations). In an important pilot fibromyalgia clinical study, the SEANOL-based product evidenced the following clinical outcomes: 71% increase in energy, 56% increase in sleep quantity, 80% improvement in the quality of sleep, 45 min faster to sleep, 30% reduction in pain, 39% improvement in Global Impact (functions of daily life). Precisely this one may be the first benefit that people who have tried Marine-D3 usually report: they sleep better and feel more awake or alert; followed by pain and imflamation relief.

Notably, the advanced (Phase III) clinical studies sponsored by major pharmaceutical companies that have been organized and conducted for their developmental fibromyalgia compounds have virtually all been unable to achieve statistical significance from placebo or ‘p-values’ in outcomes (typical ‘p-values’ have ranged from 0.4-0.6). In direct contrast to these results, Seanol’s typical ‘p-values’ in primary clinical outcomes with confirmed FMS patients were <0.001 in value (the only exception in ‘p-value’ was <0.024, for “mean time to sleep”) in this small (n=36) Phase I clinical study.

Neuroprotective benefits:

Inflamed blood vessels affect the nerves and cause neuropathy. Studies have shown that Seanol reduces the nerve pain by decreasing the inflammation in the blood vessels. Seanol compounds can neutralize the neurotoxic free-radical peroxinitrite and promote neurological function. They increase alpha waves in the brain, which are responsible for relaxing the blood vessels and balancing your brain’s activity. Increases focus and concentration: By improving the blood circulation, Seanol improves the oxygen and nutrient supply to the brain. Memory and concentration are very much affected by free radicals. Free radicals damage some of the neurotransmitters which can affect memory and brain function. Anti- oxidants can curb up the free radicals and help in improving neurotransmission. It improves mental as well as physical energy levels.

Skin Benefits:

This amazing polyphenol provides you ample skin benefits. It prevents the oxidative damage of the skin cells, thereby reducing aging spots, fine lines, wrinkles and crows feet, and keeps your skin youthful and glowing. By fighting off the free radicals in the skin cells, it sweeps off years from your skin, making it look younger and beautiful.

Side effects:

Seanol is manufactured from edible algae, and is considered a food. To date, no toxicity, side effects or interaction of any kind has been found. Seanol is a momentous breakthrough in antioxidant power. From your heart and blood vessels to your brain and skin, Seanol provides you potent health benefits with long lasting results.

Calamarine Oil: High DHA Omega-3

Until now, Fish oil vs Krill oil was the most common debate that was quite popular among health enthusiasts. This is because both Fish oil and Krill oil are the daily nutritious supplements that
contain omega 3-fatty acids. Nutritionists recommend omega-3 fatty acids in your daily diet because of their well-known health benefits such as promoting health skin and hair, normal functioning of brain and maintaining cardiovascular health. However, recent studies and research have discovered a new “Super Nutrient” that delivers six times the omega 3s and DHA than fish oil or krill oil. Until now fish oil and krill oil were considered the best sources of healthy omega-3s, but now scientists have started unlocking the natural hidden secrets of Calamarine oil. Let us find out more about this amazing super nutrient that provides you high amounts of healthy omega3 fatty acids.

Calamarine Oil:

Calamarine oil is purified high DHA Omega-3 oil obtained from deep sea calamari, or squid found in pure, clean waters of the sea. Studies have shown that calamarine oil delivers 85 percent more DHA than fish oil.

Most people are aware of the health benefits of omega 3 fatty acids: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentanoic acid (EPA). Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids which are not produced by the body. Hence, it has to be consumed from external food source. But, what most of the people do not know is that DHA is the more powerful omega 3 that provides several potent health benefits. Although DHA is contained in fish oil, DHA is superior in Calamarine compared to fish oil. Most fish oil usually contains more EPA than DHA. Since DHA produces most of the benefits it makes sense to take higher DHA formulation than fish oil.

Calamarine oil contains high amount of healthier omega 3 fatty acid DHA. Calamarine in Marine-D3 contains the ideal 2:1 proportion of DHA:EPA.

Health benefits of DHA:

DHA is the primary building block of the brain, eyes and heart, and plays an important role in other important body functions. DHA has been linked with memory, vision, cardiovascular health and joint health. Let us discuss in detail how DHA, a vital ingredient promotes overall physical as well as mental health.

Cardiovascular health/Atherosclerosis:

The cardiovascular health is directly related to the LDL levels and inversely related to HDL levels in the body. LDL is the “bad cholesterol” that gets accumulated in the blood vessels, and increases the risk of stroke and heart attack. On the other hand, HDL is the good cholesterol that lowers your risk of heart attack and stroke. Studies have shown that both EPA and DHA increases HDL and decreases the levels of LDL and triglycerides in the body, thereby promoting cardiovascular health. But, a recent double-blind, placebo controlled study showed a triglyceride decrease of 26 percent for subjects taking DHA, in contrast to 21 percent decrease for those taking EPA supplements. Hence, DHA has been proved to be more effective in lowering triglycerides.

Purified DHA has also been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce blood viscosity. This helps in maintaining proper blood flow and oxygen flow from the heart to the other parts of the body.

Brain health:

DHA is the major building block of the brain. Studies have shown that this structural fat (DHA) forms up to 30 percent of the structural fat in the gray matter of the brain and 98 percent of the omega 3s in the brain. It is critical for optimal brain health and function at all ages of the life. DHA builds cell membranes in the brain and supports mental and nervous system development. It improves brain functions such as memory, concentration, attention span, processing and other brain skills. DHA is an essential nutrient for growing children and adolescents, whose brains are in growth phase.

Researchers have found that the beneficial effects of DHA can help in improving the symptoms of ADHD in children. DHA helps in improving concentration and mental focus, which are the main symptoms of children with ADHD.

Eye health:

As age advances, the vision and eye health are affected due to macular degeneration caused by gradual inflammation in the body. However, studies have shown that DHA have anti-inflammatory properties that are effective in reducing inflammation in the tissues in eyes and other parts of the body.

Other benefits:

Dementia and alzheimer prevention, inflammatory diseases relief, maternal-childhood development, joint health and other general health benefits have been described.

Why Calamarine Oil?

The benefits of higher DHA intake:

Many clinical studies have documented the beneficial effects of DHA, and scientists recommend taking DHA supplements for promoting good health and longevity. Calamarine oil, derived from squids contains highest amounts of this amazing health nutrient- DHA.

On the other hand, fish do not produce their own DHA. The DHA in fish oil is derived from parent molecule, alpha linolenic acid (ALA). The fish converts the ALA found in seaweeds in DHA and EPA by a series of metabolic processes in the fish. Calamarine oil contains right content of DHA and EPA- which is 2:1.

Long stability:

Fish oil is unstable and therefore fish oil supplements go rancid (oxidated) quickly and easily. When these rancid oils enter the body, they are converted in to harmful substances called lipid peroxides, which can be quite dangerous for heart and blood vessels.

Whereas, Calamarine oil is highly stable and has high Oil Stability Index test results against oxidation.

No toxic metals:

There are some adverse effects related to fish oil. These side effects are seen mainly in low quality fish oil supplements, which are impure and contain toxic metals. Some may observe indigestion, nausea, bad breath and heart burn, which goes away after some time.

Calamarine oil is much more pure than fish or krill oil. It also undergoes a detoxification process which removes all the substances that can possibly increase oxidation, and also removes toxic substances.

Uniquely sustainable marine source:

The increased fishing of krill or fish causes potential impacts on the food chain and therefore disturbs the marine ecosystem. Calamarine oil is a greener and cleaner solution to obtain the benefits of omega3 fatty acids. The fishing methods for calamarine produce no collateral harm to the surrounding ocean environment.

Eco-friendly fisheries:

Highly selective fisheries, with no impact on ocean floor or coral reefs and virtually zero by-catch.

Switch to healthier and more potent DHA supplement Calamarine oil. Calamarine oil in Marine-D3 is an eco-friendly omega3 supplement that provides you a wide array of health benefits.

Antioxidants and why you need them to achieve a healthier and longer life

You can’t ignore the signs of aging- dry skin, fine wrinkles, loosening of skin, age spots, aching joints and decreasing energy levels. These effects are seen due to the damage caused by free radicals on the body. Latest studies have revealed that anti-oxidants can delay the effects of aging so that you can enjoy your youth for a longer time. Let us understand more about the role of anti-oxidants in fighting free radicals and delaying the effects of aging.

What are anti-oxidants?

Anti-oxidants are substances that neutralize the effects of free radicals. Antioxidants are phytochemicals, vitamins and other nutrients that protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants are your army to protect you from the toxic free radicals. They play an important role in preventing the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke.

What are free radicals?

Oxygen is an essential element in every second of our life, yet it is also inherently dangerous to our existence. Our body uses oxygen to carry out different biochemical processes in the cell (the process is called oxidation). During the process the electrons are transferred from a substance to an oxidising agent, and active free oxygen radicals are created. For example, rusting of iron or rotting of fruit are effects of oxidation reactions.

Free radicals, also known as oxidants are the unbalanced molecules containing unpaired electron. They are the harmful by-products of the normal cell metabolism going on within the human body. Although free radicals are beneficial to the body to some extent, but scientists believe that they do more harm than good. As these free radicals contain free electron, they are highly unstable and extremely reactive with other molecules.

How free radicals are harmful for the body?

The process of oxidation is carried out during various cell processes. During this chemical reaction, the electrons are transferred between molecules by an oxidizing agent. This releases free radicals with unstable electrons. Now, if free radicals are not rapidly neutralized by anti-oxidants they start causing damage to the healthy cells. This process is known as oxidative stress.

As free radicals have one less or more electrons, they try to steal or give electrons to other molecules, thereby damaging their cellular structure. Free radicals are highly reactive and they react with important cellular components such as DNA and cellular membrane. Cells may function defectively, perform poorly,

or even die if this occurs. Studies have shown that the root cause of chronic degenerative diseases is cell damage by free radicals. Oxidative stress by free radicals has the potential to overpower all our protective systems and cause chronic degenerative diseases.

How do anti-oxidants help in neutralizing free radicals?

Anti-oxidants have the property to neutralize free radical without becoming free radicals themselves. They terminate the process of oxidation by neutralizing free radical. They work in two ways:

  • Stopping the chain reaction: When a free radical releases or steals an electron from other molecule, a second free radical is formed. This second radical repeats the process and creates new free radicals. Hence, the process of converting healthy cells in to harmful radicals keeps on going until the termination occurs. Anti-oxidants have the ability to stabilize the highly reactive free radical and stop the chain reaction.
  • Preventing the chain reaction: Some antioxidants like catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase work by scavenging the free radicals that initiate the chain reaction. Hence, they simply convert the harmful radicals into harmless products.

Antioxidants play many other functions in the body. They affect cell differentiation and proliferation, stimulate the immune response, maintain the integrity of the cell membranes,
block nitrosamine formation and help in repair of DNA.

Types of anti-oxidants:

On the basis of solubility, antioxidants are categorised in to water-soluble and lipid-soluble. Water- soluble antioxidants perform their function in the cellular fluid, whereas lipid-soluble ones protect the cell membranes.

Antioxidants are also classified as exogenous and endogenous:

  1. Exogenous antioxidants are compounds that we get from our diet by eating antioxidant-rich foods. Examples include vitamin A, Ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, selenium and vitamin E.
  2. Endogenous antioxidants are produced by our own body. They are more potent and serve as primary line of defense against free radicals. They initiate the process of cell regeneration. Some of the examples of endogenous antioxidants include catalase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase.

Apart from minerals, vitamins and enzymes, many other compounds and nutrients have anti-oxidant properties. These include coenzyme Q10, uric acid and phytochemicals.

Health benefits of anti-oxidants:

Anti-oxidants are indispensable for our overall well-being. Studies have shown that people who eat a diet rich in anti-oxidants live longer and healthier lives.

  1. A diet high in anti-oxidants reduces the risk of chronic degenerative diseases, including diabetes, heart diseases, cancer and other age-related diseases.
  2. Vitamin and mineral rich diet enhances your immune system and prevents frequent illnesses.
  3. These miracle nutrients help in keeping your skin healthy, young and beautiful.
  4. They protect the central nervous system, and reduce the development of age related braindisorders.
  5. They keep our eyes healthy.
  6. They make us more vital and energetic.

Sources of anti-oxidants:

If you want to increase the amount of anti-oxidants in your diet, there are plenty of foods to choose from. The dietary sources of anti-oxidants are:

Anthocyanins- grapes and berries
Beta-carotene- carrots, spinach and apricots
Catechins- red wine and tea
Lignans- bran, whole grains, sesame seeds and vegetables
Lutein- green leafy vegetables and corn
Polyphenols- Seanol (ECE-Ecklonia Cava Extract), oregano and thyme Flavonoids- green tea, citrus fruits, apples, tea and onion Isoflavonoids- tofu, peas, milk and lentils
Vitamin C- oranges, gooseberries, mangoes, pineapple and strawberries Vitamin E- nuts, seeds, whole grains and avocados
Lycopene- tomatoes, watermelon

Though food sources may provide sufficient amounts of antioxidants, in today’s fast paced lifestyle, many people are unable to include the above mentioned anti-oxidant rich foods in their daily diet. Hence, it is important to supplement your body externally by taking anti-oxidant supplements. However, scientific evidence suggests that not all supplements are as effective as naturally occurring anti-oxidant rich foods. Therefore, include a variety of fruits, vegetables, juices and soups in your daily diet and have demonstrated to be highly effective antioxidant supplements like Seanol, specially Seanol-P.

Essential Fatty Acids: Omega-3 and Omega-6

What Are Essential Fatty Acids
Essential fatty acids are, as they sound, fats that are essential to the diet. Essential fatty acids (EFA) cannot be synthesized in the human body from any other fatty acids in out diet. Fatty acids are the building blocks of the fats (lipids) in our bodies. When we consume fats, they are broken down in to individual fatty acids. Our body can synthesize some of the fats it needs from the foods you eat. Those are the non-essential fatty acids. However, essential fatty acids cannot be manufactured in the body and need to come from the diet. There are twenty different needed fatty acids in the body, but they all are made from two essential fatty
acids- linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. These two basic fats are required to build specialized fats called omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty acids:
Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are essential to the body to maintain certain functions and to aid in keeping you healthy. They belong to the class of Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Deficiencies of these two are responsible for a host of symptoms and disorders including decreased immune function, liver and kidney disorders, changes in skin like dryness and scaliness and depression. ALA or Alpha linolenic acid is a precursor of the long chain omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and linoleic acid is a precursor of omega-6 fatty acids, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), arachadonic acid (AA) and dihomogamma-linolenic acid (AGLA).

Structural Composition:
Both the types, omega-3 and omega-6 are unsaturated, which means, they contain carbon-carbon double bonds. Omega-3 has the final double bond at n-3 position, whereas omega-6 has a carbon-carbon double bond at n-6 position.
Omega-3 EFAs:
While the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids have been known since early 20th century, its awareness has significantly increased over last 2 decades
Omega-3 is critical to the biological function of the human body. These vital nutrients are required for membrane structural integrity and fluidity and in other important body processes. They support the cardiovascular, reproductive, immune and nervous systems. They modulate cell division, help in synthesis of neurochemicals, and control oxidation of cholesterol. They are responsible for normal functioning of brain and also help in maintaining cardiovascular health.

Health benefits:
Cardiovascular benefits: According to American Heart Association, clinical studies have shown the beneficial effects of omega-3 in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disorders. DHA and EPA help to reduce heart arrhythmias, improve the ratio of good and bad cholesterol, prevent the deposition of cholesterol and triglycerides and promote overall cardiovascular health. Normal levels of omega-3 in the body maintain healthy blood circulation, ensuring proper oxygen and nutrients supply to different parts of the body. Due to the proven heart benefits of omega-3, American Heart Association recommends omega 3 fatty acids in the daily diet to protect heart related disorders.
Joint Health: Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, omega-3 (EPA and DHA) is helpful in a number of inflammatory conditions, like joint pain, arthritis etc. Studies have found that omega-3 fats help in reducing joint pain intensity, morning stiffness and number of tender joints.
Brain development: DHA is the major component of brain. DHA plays a major role in development and growth of brain. It helps in improving memory, concentration and ability to focus on complex tasks. Research has found that consuming omega-3 during pregnancy and lactation helps in preventing ADHD and other behavioural disorders in children.
Skin health: Sufficient intake of omega-3 fats help in keeping your skin moisturised, soft and healthy. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, omega 3 reduces inflammation of the skin, and thereby works as a great anti-aging nutrient. It is an essential component of the outer membrane of the skin cells.

Omega-6 Fatty acids:
Omega-6 plays an important role as a messenger at cellular level. It has three major functions:
– It plays an important role in the cell growth; hence it is essential for muscle and brain development. Due to this reason, omega-6 Arachidonic acid (AA)is added to most of the infant formulas.
– Omega-6 plays a vital role in the production of hormone like messengers, PGE1. These PGE1 messengers formed from linolenic acid trigger immune responses and reduce fluid accumulation. Omega 6 fatty acids is known as the brain food due to its benefits in imporving medical conditions like multiple sclerosis, depression, ADHD, and other brain disorders. PGE2 messengers are made from arachidonic acid and they play a major role in the triggering an immune response in process of inflammation. PGE2 results in swelling, pain, blood thinning and accumulation of inflamed cells at place of injury or inflammation.
– Omega-6 EFA also acts as a transmitter of nerve impulses.

Dietary sources:
Omega-3 EFAs: oily fish, squid and algae are the major source of omega 3, specially the most important DHA. Consumers of oily fish should be aware of the potential presence of heavy metals and fat-soluble pollutants and dioxins.
Other foods like flaxseeds, hempseeds and mustard seeds also contain good amount of omega-3. It is also found in walnut oil, green leafy vegetables, grains and spirulina. The amount of DHA in plants (except algae) is usually inexistent. Our body needs to convert the ALA from seeds and plants to EPA and DHA to receive the full benefits, but the conversion of ALA to DHA is very limited, specially in men, and can’t compensate the lack of DHA in our diet. That is why DHA is increasingly considered as an essential fatty acid itself.
Omega-6 EFAs: Omega-6 fats can be obtained from fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, animal products and seeds.

Harmful effects of excess intake of omega 6:
Though omega 6 is required by the body in several biological functions of the body, but excess omega-6 can cause massive inflammation. Excessive intake of omega-6 is known to be a silent killer as it produces inflammatory substances called leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are 10,000 times more inflammatory than PGE2, but they cause no pain. Hence, they lead to gradual inflammation in the body, which further results in development of insidious diseases like obesity, diabetes and cancer.
A high omega-6 diet will also drop your omega-3 index. An Omega-3 Index of > or = 8% is associated with the greatest cardioprotection, whereas an index of < or = 4% was associated with the least.

Importance of balance between omega 3 (DHA:EPA) and omega 6 fatty acids:
Though both the essential fats are important for the body, it is necessary to maintain the correct ratio between them. Excessive amounts of omega-6 fats and a very high amount of omega6/omega3 ratio is found in today’s Western diets. This promotes the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, cancer and inflammatory diseases.
The ideal ratio between omega 6 and omega 3 should be 1:1 and should not be higher than 4:1. We should be closely observant of the amounts of omega 6 and omega 3 in our every day diet. In general, the amount of omega-6 in our diet is very abundant while the amount of omega-3 is very low. The usual ratio in western population is between 10:1 and 20:1. These high ratios are known to have very adverse consequences in our health.
The ratio of DHA:EPA should be 2:1- the same ratio found in healthy people in areas like Japan and Norway where seafood consumption is high. These people have amazingly healthy hearts and historically low death rates from cardiovascular disease. Experts attribute this to their high omega-3 intake, specially to DHA.
In conclusion most of the people should significantly increase their intake of omega-3, specially DHA, and some people should even have to limit their intake of omega-6.
